Breaking news…

It has just been confirmed that Ipswich Golf Club’s application for the GolfMark award has been successful and that “High Achiever” status is to be awarded by the EGU.

The EGU assessor was very impressed with work by junior organiser Sheila Laws – in conjunction with assistant professional Ryan Wingate and general manager Neill Ellice. They have been working hard over the past 12 months towards this accreditation from the EGU/EWGA.

The award identifies junior and beginner-friendly golf clubs.  More details in next month’s Purdis News.

Club bursary fund tops £3,000

On behalf of the trustees, I should like to thank all those members who have given generous financial support to the bursary fund.

Many donations have been received from members. The immediate past president and immediate past captain have been particularly generous – giving part or all of the money raised at their charity events during their year.

The fund also benefited from proceeds of the Burns Night raffle and one organised by the seniors.

Your generosity has enabled us to provide club shirts and tops for the juniors, help with their coaching fees, provide prizes for a competition and support junior matches.

We look forward to supporting more applications for funds during the year.

At our meeting in April it was reported that £3,093.80 had been received and £539.20 spent, so the fund now stands at £2,554.60.

Juniors shine in county events

Our juniors have been doing well in county events.

Josh Cottrell had a successful debut for the Suffolk men's second team – winning his foursomes and singles matches against Northants at Rushmere.

Sarah Howe, our junior captain, was second in the Suffolk Ladies’ County Strokeplay Championship at Stowmarket.   In the Matchplay Championship she won her first-round match but was beaten in the quarter-finals.   Sarah has been selected for the Suffolk ladies’ team for County Match Week at West Herts Golf Club this month.

Sarah, Charlotte Double and Lily Kent played in the Suffolk girls’ first team that drew against Norfolk at Weston Park.   Abbie Symonds and Lottie Whyman played in the second team and both won their matches.

The Friday evening roll-up has started.   Be at the club by 4.45pm for a 5pm start.   All abilities welcome.

We will be playing at Gorleston in the next round of the Suffolk Junior Club Team Championship.

Convincing win for ladies

Ipswichladies beat St Clements at home 31-14.  Well done to the team: Angela Key, Gloria Rockliff, Jean Tibble, Sheila Spencer, Joyce Pearce and Gloria Lee.

Ipswichwent well ahead in the morning foursomes, 14-1, and kept their lead in the afternoon to win by this convincing margin.

The match started in very humid weather then heavy drizzle, turning almost icy, but in the afternoon the sun came out and shirt sleeves were the order of the day.

Ipswichhave another home draw on Thursday, June 24, against Diss.

Champagne celebration

Well done to Keith Hayward and Joyce Pearce who won the Champagne Breakfast Mixed Rye Greensomes with 40 points from Kevin Hume and Angela Key on 39.

This was a very enjoyable contest, completed just before the wind got up.

There will be a “three clubs and putter” competition over 10 holes of the main course on Friday, July 30, followed by a barbecue. Any fourball combination of men, ladies and juniors can play from 3.30 to about 5pm. An entry sheet is in the pro shop.

Guests are welcome at the barbecue after the golf. A putting competition – open to all – will be run by assistant professional Ryan.

Advance notice – the annual ball is on October 16. The 2010 New Year's Eve party will follow the traditional club format.

Second-round KO for Tolly team

The Ipswich men’s team were knocked out of this year’s Tolly Cobbold competition when they lost by nine holes to Rookery Park in the second round.

Don’t forget the dress codes

A message from president, Henry Lambon

Summer has arrived and with it the warmer weather so perhaps a reminder is needed that we have dress codes for both course and clubhouse.

Members are kindly requested to observe these. If you encounter others who are not doing so, please refer them politely to the code or, in case of difficulty, to the general manager.

(Copies of the codes are on the noticeboards and beside the lounge door.)
